Let’s explore the inside mystery of the Circleville Letters story.
The Letter said “You have been watched: Failure to comply and you shall suffer: no one can help you: no one can protect you: Obey: Obey:”
Such letters were received by “Circleville”, Ohio residents in the late “1970s”.
“Circleville” is a small town, best known for its annual Pumpkin show since 1903. It was a village where almost everyone was familiar to each other. There was all over peace and happiness, but in late 1970s, something strange and horrific happened in this peaceful village:
Residents started receiving “anonymous letters” with personal information and accusations.
Anonymous letters
The letters were hand written, sent out with no return addresses. Recipients were being accused of embezzlement, domestic violence, affairs, and even murders. Thousands of such letters were received by the residents.
WHO WAS THIS LETTER WRITER AND HOW DID HE KNOW ABOUT THE SECRETS OF OTHERS?
One of them, who received such letters was “Mary Gillipsie”.
“Mary Gillipsie” became the main target of such letters. She was a school bus driver. She claimed to be happily married, but the letter accused Gillipsie of having an affair with school superintendent “Gordon Massie”. Gordon was also married. The writer wanted Mary to accept the affair in front of the school and end this relationship as soon as possible. The letter was threatening her for severe consequences. But Mary was not ready to accept the affair at all, on the other side, the letters were becoming increasingly threatening.
NOW, THE WRITER DIDN’T STOP AND WENT TOO FAR.
Now her husband, Ronald Gillipsie, began receiving such letters too. The writer, was adamant that an alleged affair is happening between Mary and Gordon “wrote” to Ronald Gillipsie; “You should catch them together and kill them both” or they would kill you.
THINK, HOW HORRIBLE IT SOUNDS FOR A HUSBAND TO KNOW SUCH THINGS ABOUT HIS WIFE.
Meanwhile, they all were frightened due to these letters and guessing who could write. Meanwhile, on one evening of August 1977, while Mary was on her way to Florida, Ronald received “a mysterious phone call” allegedly from the writer. The conversation became worst after which something horrible happened:
Ronald drove off in his pickup truck and was killed by crashing into a tree. A “Gun” that had been fired once was found near his body, raising the question, if he had been firing at the letter writer then why no one heard the sound?
The things didn’t stop even after the death of Mary’s husband, She was continuously denying having an affair with Gordon Massie, but after her husband’s demise, She says that I and Gordon began seeing each other, which was a white lie. This statement of Mary triggered the writer even more.
On February 7, 1983, Marry was driving her bus route to pick up kids. On the way, she saw an obscene sign about her 13-years-old daughter. She tried to pull the sign own from the fence, but she noticed that was rigged with twine and a box. She took the box home and opened it. Inside the box was a gun ready to go off . Marry took so much time to hand over the box to the police and after which the investigation started.
SENSE THE SUSPENSE!!!
WHY DID MARY DELAY IN INFORMING ABOUT THE INCIDENT TO THE POLICE?
DID SHE HERSELF PLAN TO TAKE BENEFITS OF SUCH ANONYMOUS LETTERS TO KILL HER HUSBAND AND SAVE HER AFFAIR WITH GORDON?
WAS THAT GUN OWNER ,THE LETTER WRITER OR MARY HERSELF WAS THE WRITER OF HER FATE ?
In investigation, the police traced the serial number of the gun and found the owner. The gun belonged to “Paul Freshour”. The news was shocking because Freshour was actually Mary and Ronald’s brother-in-law.
Freshour always believed that ‘Ronald had been murdered’ and he had nothing to do with threatening letters. But he was arrested for try to attempt murder of Mary. Although, Freshour was never charged with writing the letters, but everyone presumed the letter writer is now behind the bars. Unfortunately, the letters never stopped, Freshour was not even allowed to use pen or paper whole behind bars, but the letters still continued , Even Freshour received one.
WHO WAS THIS WRITER AND HOW COULD HE DESTROY SO MANY LIVES?
The letters didn’t stop even after his arrest:
one of the letters said to Paul Freshour “Now when you’re going to believe you aren’t getting out of there: I told you two years ago : when we set em up: they stay set up:”
Former FBI profiler ” Ellen ‘o’ Toole” looked at the letters that continued while Paul Freshour was in prison. After nearly 20 years, the letters stopped in 1994 when Freshour was released from prison. Over the years, Freshour still maintained his innocence.
So, the question arises that who was the person behind writing those letters, is still a suspense?
